New ASLA Student Representative Elected
John Stecyk, Student ASLA, to begin term at Mid-year meeting.

John Stecyk, Student ASLA, a master of landscape architecture candidate at Illinois Institute of Technology, has been elected 2009–2010 ASLA Student Representative. Stecyk’s term will begin at the close of ASLA’s Midyear Meeting (April 29–May 2), marking the end of the term for current Student Representative Jordan Jones, Student ASLA.

Prior to attending Illinois Institute of Technology, Stecyk attended Loyola University in Chicago and earned his bachelor of arts in studio arts, drawing, and painting. He currently owns a freelance design business, John Stecyk Graphic Design. Prior to starting his own business, Stecyk worked at Brian-Keith Advertising in Oak Brook, Illinois, where he developed, designed, and produced display advertising and assorted collateral for numerous developer and real estate industry clients.

As student representative, Stecyk hopes to use his strong communication and organizational skills as well as his passion for the profession to unite students from across the country and to encourage and develop leadership within and among student chapters. He is committed to listening to students’ concerns and interests and making confident decisions to help promote the profession.

Relating to landscape architecture, Stecyk is most interested in ecology, sustainability, green roofs, stormwater management, healing gardens, and preserving open spaces. In his spare time he enjoys hiking, camping, cycling, kayaking, photography, reading, and writing.
